Privacy & Confidentiality
Privacy and confidentiality have become increasingly problematic when related to new media. New media platforms such as Facebook, virtual video games, blogs, etc all request for personal information about the user. As more people use these platforms, more people reveal personal information about themselves. Users are no longer as wary of their privacy or confidentiality issues. Over time, people may believe that it is common for these new media platforms to obtain personal information from the users. However, users don't realize that their information is being sold to advertising agencies and used for data mining. As a result, personal information may be easily searched by anyone on the Internet. Perhaps we are too accustomed to sharing our personal information on new media sites.

I completely agree with you, however despite knowing of the potential dangers that may occur from me placing my personal information into the hands of others, I still do it. I believe that sometimes it seems to be offset by the current benefits and convenience that the various platforms offer. It is quite staggering to realize just how public all of the information placed on the internet is. Just by running a quick google search off of my name or email address, I've noticed I can track what I've been doing or involved with over a good portion of my life. Gone are the days where people have to rummage through trash and stalk people for personal information. With the simple click of a few keys and viola. I'm a bit worried about exposing myself so much publicly but thankfully most people on the internet have better things to do like looking at funny cat pictures.
ReplyDeleteHi Melody,
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with how people don't really know that their data is being sold to other companies, not even just advertising companies.
Recently, I applied for a credit card through Chase Bank, and even before I received the card I was receiving mailers with advertisements to apply for a credit card through other banks.
I also agree with your how our names can be searched for on the internet, this particularly important. This is because all information posted online linked to your name is there to stay, therefore if future employers try to look you up before interviewing or hiring you they may find this they do not like. People should focus on understanding this concept, especially students as it will be helpful for them as we approach graduation.
